PMR PORTFOLIO

INTRODUCTION

This portfolio documents the creative development and exploration of professional techniques involved in writing, recording and releasing my debut single, “Uh Oh”. From the song’s initial development and collaborative decisions made during the recording process, to the branding, release strategy, and outcomes, this portfolio showcases how I produced the key assets required for a professional music release. A link is provided to access my press release below.

Development

After careful consideration about how I plan on advancing as a solo artist, I decided to focus on the wrong I wrote in response to brief 3.

This brief required us to pick our favourite commercial artist and write a pop song that would fit their style.

As a huge fan of CMAT, I decided to seek inspiration from her music.

I already had the initial idea for Uh Oh, with the BVs in the first verse, and chose to develop this further.

My typical writing style doesn't neccesarily fit into this commerical pop world, so my goal was create a track that had a catchy hook and sing-along chorus.

Revising and Rewriting

When writing the song in the songwriting workshop, I structured it as A B A C D A C D.

I battled with the idea of adding in a middle 8, as I felt the song needed an extra section. Again, I wanted to keep the song familiar and sing-alongy, therefore I added in a repeated middle 8 section with the familiar chord pattern and lyrics, layering up some harmonies before going back into a final chorus.

Production and Collaboration

When thinking about production references, I keep circling back to "When a good man cries" by CMAT. The acoustic guitar and strings part really stood out for me and I wanted to encapsulate that in this track. The track was written on piano within the workshop, but after coming home and playing it on guitar alongside my friend on violin, I felt that was the foundation for the production process.

I brought in Paul Leslie and Liam Docherty to help with the production process. We recorded the instrumental parts together and I recorded the vocals seperately.

Branding and Promotion

I wanted the artwork to reflect the essence of the song - therefore using these lettered beads and positioning them so it looks like they have all scattered whilst spelling out the title of the track gave this "Uh Oh" feel that I kept referring to.

I created an Instagram account for my solo work entitled @amy.mcmanus.music where I announced the song and the artwork.

In the run up to the release, I announced the single a week before with the official artwork. I then posted an acoustic video to tease the track and gain attention. I then posted some more artwork that was visually similar with the official artwork to keep everything in this release cohesive and together. I continuously posted stories to stay on people's fyps and remind them to pre-save the track.
